Labiaplasty

MIA’s “Barbie” Procedure is our signature minimally invasive technique for labiaplasty. It is kinda like a “labiaplasty” only better. Labiaplasty is a plastic surgery procedure used to reshape the lips of the vagina for aesthetic or functional purposes. Enlarged labia are trimmed, tightened, and reduced. This procedure is often referred to as the “Barbie” procedure.

Overview:  Labiaplasty is a treatment for enlarged or irregular labia often done for cosmetic enhancement or medical reasons. Many women are born with large or irregular labia. Others develop this condition after childbirth or with aging. The appearance of the enlarged labia can cause embarrassment with a sexual partner or loss of self esteem. Some women just want to look “prettier” like the women they see in magazines or in films. Chronic labial irritation can sometimes develop in women who wear tight clothing. Discomfort can occur with sex, sports or other physical activities. Labiaplasty can greatly enhance the cosmetic appearance of the outer vagina giving many women greater confidence and self esteem. Women whose labia become irritated and painful will often find relief after surgery. Our technique, does all of the above with a special emphasis on making you look and feel sexy, attractive, and young, like a “Barbie” doll!

What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic genital surgical procedure that will reduce the size or change the shape of the small lips on the outside of the vagina (the labia minora). Many women are born with large or irregular labia. Others develop this condition after childbirth or with aging. The appearance of the enlarged labia can cause embarrassment with a sexual partner or loss of self esteem. Some women just want to look “prettier” like the women they see in magazines or in films.Chronic labial irritation can sometimes develop in women who wear tight clothing. Discomfort can occur with sex, sports or other physical activities.Labiaplasty surgery can greatly enhance the cosmetic appearance of the outer vagina, giving many women greater confidence and self-esteem. Women whose labia become irritated and painful will often find relief after surgery.

Why would I want a Labiaplasty?

The two main reasons are discomfort and esthetics. Many women feel uncomfortable or irritated when wearing tight clothing, having sexual relations, or exercising. Other women just want to look “prettier”. With the increased availability and acceptance of sexually explicit materials in our society, this is becoming more common. Often these women feel embarrassed or self-conscious in front of their partners.Cosmetic Reasons: Women who are unhappy or embarrassed with the way their labia look. Often this affects sexual relationships and self-esteem. Some women just want to look as beautiful as they can for themselves and their partner. With the increasing openness of society to sexuality and greater exposure to sexually explicit materials, labiaplasty is becoming increasingly popular.Medical Reasons: Women who have discomfort from enlarged labia. This can come from exercise, sexual activity or from wearing tight clothes.

I don’t have children. Can I still get a labiaplasty?

Yes. Whether you have had children or not is not the issue. The issue is whether the enlarged labia cause physical discomfort or unhappiness because of their appearance.

Where is the Labiaplasty surgery performed?

The surgeries are performed in our outpatient surgical suite located in Houston. We are proud that our office is an accredited AAAASF surgical facility.

What is the average length of time of a labiaplasty procedure?

The average length of a labiaplasty procedure is about 1 hour. An additional hour is spent in our recovery room under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

What type of Anesthesia is used for Labiaplasty surgery?

We perform this procedure under conscious sedation usually using a a very short acting medication named Diprovan (propophol). You will be asleep during the procedure and will awaken within minutes after the surgery is completed. You will not be paralyzed or intubated during the surgery. Please note that this is different at other facilities where the patient is often awake during the surgical procedure. We feel that our patients are more comfortable using this form of anesthesia. Anesthesia services are provided by board certified anesthesiologists and are included in the cost of the procedure.

What are the risks involved in labiaplasty surgery?

The most common risks of labiaplasty surgery may include bleeding, infection, and scarring, however these are very unusual.

What is the postoperative period like?

You will have discomfort at the surgical site for the first few days which will then decrease. All patients are sent home with prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics. Full healing takes approximately six weeks. All sutures used are absorbable and therefore do not need to be removed.

How many postoperative visits required after labiaplasty surgery?

For our patients in the Houston area we recommend post operative visits at two, four, six, and eight weeks to insure proper healing and excellent results. For our patients from out of town we recommend, if at all possible, a post operative visit at three to four weeks.

When can I return to work post labiaplasty surgery?

Most patients return to work in two to four days after surgery. General medical excuse letters for work that do not state the type of surgery are available upon request.

When can I resume exercise post labiaplasty surgery?

We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for at least four weeks and possibly longer.

When can I resume sexual activity after the labiaplasty procedure?

Sexual activity usual can resume six to eight weeks after the labiaplasty surgical procedure.

Will labiaplasty surgery result in decrease sensation?

For the vast majority of women the clitoris is the structure associated with sensory pleasure, not the labia. As such you should not notice any loss of pleasurable sensation after surgery. Many women find sexual activity more pleasurable because the Labia are no longer irritated during intercourse.

WILL LABIAPLASTY ALTER THE SKIN SURROUNDING MY CLITORIS?

Usually this area is not altered during the surgery. Some women do have excessive skin in this area and it can be trimmed to give a more pleasing and natural appearance at the time of surgery. This can be discussed at the time of consultation.

WILL MY SEXUAL PARTNER NOTICE A DIFFERENCE AFTER MY LABIAPLASTY SURGERY?

If the labia were interfering with intercourse, both of you will notice an improvement. Visually, your partner should notice that your labia are now smaller and better proportioned.

CAN LABIAPLASTY AND VAGINOPLASTY PROCEDURES BE DONE AT THE SAME TIME?

Yes. Both procedures can be done at the same time.

DOES INSURANCE COVER THE COST OF LABIAPLASTY SURGERY?

Insurance usually does not cover this surgery because it is considered elective.

Vaginoplasty

MIA’S Diva minimally invasive technique is like a vaginoplasty but much improved. It is a treatment for vaginal laxity. Ours is a female genital surgical procedure that tightens the vagina and the surrounding muscle and soft tissues. This surgery results in increased friction during intercourse that often enhances sexual satisfaction.

Overview:  Vaginoplasty is a treatment for vaginal laxity. Vaginoplasty is a female genital surgical procedure that tightens the vagina and surrounding muscles and soft tissues. This surgery results in increased friction during intercourse that often enhances sexual satisfaction.

During delivery of a baby the vagina and surrounding tissues and muscles become stretched. After delivery the vagina may return to a more “normal” size, but it often fails to return to its’ pre-pregnancy diameter. Generally, the more vaginal deliveries, the worse the condition gets. Many women will complain of decreased sensation and sexual satisfaction during intercourse. Commonly this is due to a lack of friction. Often their partner may notice a change although he may say nothing. Kegel exercises are often recommended but rarely succeed in restoring vaginal tightness.

We have also had numerous patients who feel loose although they have never had children. On physical exam they indeed had a vaginal diameter that was greater than expected. Vaginoplasty surgery can help these women as well.

Our technique is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that tightens the vagina and surrounding tissues yielding a vaginal tightness similar to before the patient had children. This is done by removing the excess vaginal lining and tightening the surrounding soft tissues and muscles. We paid special attention to restore you to your desired tightness without leaving any scars once everything is healed.

Tummy Tuck

About Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty):

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the stomach area. It will also tighten weakened and loose abdominal muscles to give the stomach a flatter, firmer appearance. During the procedure, an incision is made in the lower abdominal region, allowing the surgeon to access and repair the muscles that comprise the abdominal wall and remove excess fat, tissue, and skin. Depending on the individual patient, a second, higher incision may be made near the navel to excise fat and skin in the upper portion of the stomach. Liposuction may be utilized to remove excess fat during a tummy tuck.

Tummy Tuck Considerations:

During the consultation, you will be asked about the desired results you are looking to achieve. If you plan to get pregnant or lose weight, discuss this with your surgeon. Abdominoplasty is designed primarily for patients who are mostly satisfied with their weight, but who have excess skin and loose muscle around their midsections. The following conditions could indicate that a tummy tuck is right for you:

• Tightening excess skin to eliminate loose and sagging skin.
• Tightening the underlying abdominal muscles to create a firmer abdominal wall.
• Removing excess fat to eliminate a protruding tummy.
• Maintaining a stable weight, with no plans for future pregnancies. You should not undergo a tummy tuck as a substitute for weight loss or as a method for removing stretch marks.

Tummy Tuck Options:

There are many variations both to the design of the incisions and the technique itself. In some instances, it may be possible to avoid an incision around the navel. When the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are located below the navel, a short horizontal incision is all that is necessary. This procedure is called a partial, or “mini,” tummy tuck. Sometimes liposuction may be used in conjunction with tummy tuck to remove abdominal fat. An endoscopic tummy tuck is another technique for minimizing scars and may be useful when patients have only a mild degree of excess fat and muscle laxity. Your surgeon will discuss with you the particular method that he or she recommends for achieving the best result in your particular case.

What to expect:

A Tummy tuck may be performed on an outpatient basis. If this is the case, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to stay with you for at least the next day or two. When tummy tuck surgery is performed in conjunction with medically necessary procedures such as hysterectomy or hernia repair, a short hospitalization may be required. You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, unless you and your surgeon have determined that you will stay in the hospital or surgical facility overnight. Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Often, a general anesthetic is administered so that you will be asleep throughout the procedure. A tummy tuck may be performed using local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. When surgery is completed, you will be taken into a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. In many instances, small drain tubes will have been placed within the abdominal tissues to help avoid accumulation of fluids. Gauze or other dressings may be applied to your abdomen and covered with tape or an elastic bandage. You will be encouraged to go for short walks to promote blood circulation the day after surgery. Try not to sit for long periods of time during the first several days and avoid straining, bending and lifting. Your surgeon will instruct you to sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees. Within a week of surgery, any surgical drains will probably be removed. You may be instructed to wear a support garment depending on what tummy tuck technique was used. Stitches will be removed in stages over a period of one to two weeks. Bruising and some of the swelling will occur and disappear over a period of weeks. The swelling may take months to subside before you will see the final results of your tummy tuck. Even though the incisions from the procedure will heal and fade over time, it’s important to know that the incision lines will be permanently visible. Fortunately, most bathing suits and undergarments usually conceal the incisions for your tummy tuck. You may be able to resume most of your normal activities anywhere from one to three weeks after surgery. Some mild, periodic discomfort may occur, however, if you experience any severe pains you, they should be reported to your doctor.

Tummy Tuck Risks:

Each year thousands of women and men undergo successful tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedures, experience no major problems and are happy with the results. Significant complications from a tummy tuck are infrequent. However, make sure you understand what surgery involves, including possible risks, complications and follow-up care. A tummy tuck poses various risks, including:

• Pain, swelling, and bruising during the first few weeks after surgery
• Visible scarring at the points of incision
• Excess scarring
• Uneven contours may occur in spite of efforts to balance skin and fat removal
• Rippling of the skin • Fluid accumulation beneath the skin (seroma).
• Skin loss (tissue necrosis)
• Changes skin sensation
• Nerve damage

Like any major surgery, a tummy tuck poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. It’s also possible to have an allergic reaction to the surgical tape or other materials used during or after the procedure. You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your surgeon, both before and after your tummy tuck surgery. If you have any concerns about the risks involved with tummy tuck surgery, please consult your surgeon.

Liposuction

About Liposuction:

Liposuction is a procedure in which a surgeon targets very specific areas of unwanted fat between the skin and muscle for removal. Sculpting and contouring the patient’s body creates slimmer and more ideal shapes and contours. Liposuction is primarily used to eliminate stubborn areas of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise, and areas of fat that have accumulated simply due to the aging process. Liposuction surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with an open procedure to contour the overlying skin. Most liposuction procedures involve making a small puncture in the skin and then utilizing various modalities to loosen the fat prior to suctioning the fat through a small metal tube (cannula) and a suction device. If liposuction is being performed with a fat transfer procedure, the extracted fat will be purified and then injected into the target area of the body, such as the breast, butt, or face.

Liposuction Considerations:

Liposuction is about shaping the body, not about weight loss. Liposuction is not meant for individuals with notable weight issues. The results are best when you are near your ideal weight. Diet and exercise should be emphasized before proceeding with these types of procedures. The following conditions could indicate that liposuction is right for you:

• Have areas of fat deposits that are out of proportion with the rest of your body and have not responded to persistent diet and exercise
• Do not have a lot of excess skin and the area is firm (your skin elasticity is good)
• Would like more definition (toning) in certain areas of your body, a sleeker contour, or more athletic appearance You will be individually assessed during your liposuction consultation to determine if you are healthy enough to undergo surgery and if liposuction will need to be performed in conjunction with another procedure to contour the skin. Liposuction is often used to remove excess fat cells from many areas of the body, including the lower legs, thighs, hips, waist, back, chest, neck, and chin.

Liposuction Options:

There are various technologies used for liposuction to make the fat removal process less invasive, more predictable and safer. Some of the more common forms of technologies and techniques that your surgeon may recommend may include:

• Tumescent liposuction is where a solution of saline, local anesthesia, and adrenaline is injected into the fatty area of fat to be removed. This causes blood vessels to constrict and the fatty area to swell allowing the surgeon to effectively target the area to be treated. Most surgeons will use this in combination with other liposuction techniques to reduce post-surgical pain and bleeding.
• Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL) technology is the traditional form of liposuction and involves the removal of fat with a high-powered vacuum.
• Power assisted liposuction (PAL) is a technology in which the tip of the suction tube vibrates at a rapid speed. This vibration loosens the fat cells during liposuction so that they may be suctioned away gently with less trauma to the surrounding tissues. PAL is performed using the tumescent technique.

What to expect:

Recovery from liposuction can vary with each person. Pain is mild to moderate. A dressing will be applied to the treated area. In some cases, small drainage tubes may be placed in incisions to allow excess fluid to drain from the body. When surgery is completed, you will be taken into a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. You will most likely be wearing a compression garment, usually used to help support and “shrink” the skin. Compression garments are typically worn for 3 weeks 24 hours a day and then at night only for the following 3 weeks (some patients may choose to wear them longer). During the first 48 hours following surgery, patients experience varying degrees of swelling. Bruising typically disappears within seven to ten days. Swelling may persist for several months after surgery. Stitches and drains will be removed within the first ten days after the procedure. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of infection. Straining, bending over and lifting should be avoided during the early postoperative period. In many instances, you will be able to resume most of your normal activities within ten days or less. Return to work, depending on the job duties, can be as early as 3 to 4 days after surgery if needed. Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait at least several months to get an accurate picture of the results of your surgery. Usually 90% of the healing will be completed at 1 month after surgery and the final results are seen after 6 months. The small incisions used for access of the cannula will fade over a number of months, usually becoming barely visible. The results of liposuction surgery are technically permanent because the fat cells have been removed. However, your body shape and contours might be affected by weight gain, aging, pregnancy, family genetics, and lifestyle factors. It is crucial to maintain healthy habits and a stable weight to prolong the results from liposuction. Your exercise routines can usually begin 2 weeks after surgery.

Liposuction Risks:

Each year thousands of women and men undergo successful liposuction procedures, experience no major problems and are happy with the results. Significant complications from Liposuction are infrequent. However, make sure you understand what surgery involves, including possible risks, complications and follow-up care. Liposuction poses various risks, including:

• Hematoma (an accumulation of blood under the skin that may require removal)
• Sensation changes
• Scarring
• Possible need for revisions or additional procedures

Other rare side effects can include uneven contours, rippling skin and scarring. Like any major surgery, liposuction poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction to the surgical tape or other materials used during or after the procedure. You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your surgeon, both before and after your liposuction surgery. If you have any concerns about the risks involved with liposuction surgery, please consult your surgeon.
